This project was part of Life Stories by Goalcast, a studio focused on inspirational, human-centered stories. The story explored a fresh perspective on Michael Jackson, showing his childhood, isolation, and humanity through his friendship with Brooke Shields.

While much of the footage highlights Michael, the narrative structure follows Brooke’s journey, as she ultimately reflects on and intervenes in his life in a way no one else could. The goal was to present a story that was emotionally engaging, humanizing, and distinct from typical celebrity coverage, giving audiences a new lens to understand both figures.

Context

Telling a story about Michael Jackson required careful handling. We needed to humanize him without diving into controversy or sensationalizing allegations, while still creating an emotionally engaging narrative.

Brooke Shields’ childhood was also sensitive. Her early roles, parental manipulation, and legal battles were critical to the story but had to be presented responsibly and empathetically.

The story was longer and more complex than usual, spanning multiple arcs including parental control, childhood trauma, friendship, isolation, and personal growth. Balancing all these threads while keeping the story clear and engaging was a key challenge.

We also had to navigate platform rules around sensitive content, deciding what to show or reference so the story could stay impactful without violating guidelines.

The Challenge

  • Curated and developed the story, connecting Brooke Shields’ childhood experiences with Michael Jackson’s journey.'

  • Defined narrative flow and structure, shaping the story’s emotional rhythm and character arcs.

  • Guided editorial decisions, ensuring the story unfolded with clarity, engagement, and nuance.

  • Collaborated with the director, providing creative input to bring the vision to life.

  • Influenced audience-facing elements, including title, logline, and overall story tone.

  • Ensured sensitive content was handled responsibly, presenting complex childhood experiences thoughtfully.

My Role

  • Story Discovery

I first saw an interview of Brooke Shields’ mother, where she described Brooke like a commodity. The words were shocking, and they revealed a vulnerable child navigating exploitation. That became the entry point. I then explored Brooke’s story; how she grew up under her mother’s control, how she was forced into adult roles, and how she eventually broke free. While researching, I found references to Michael Jackson and his father. The parallels were striking: two children shaped by fame and strict parents, forming a rare and misunderstood bond. That friendship became the lens for the story, revealing Michael’s humanity through Brooke’s perspective.

  • Narrative Framing

The story opens with a question: what connected these two very different kids, and why did their friendship matter? I framed the narrative to build empathy, showing their experiences growing up under controlling parents and the pressures of fame. Brooke’s growth naturally revealed hope and empowerment, while Michael’s struggles highlighted his isolation. The goal was to guide the audience to understand and empathize with both of them, focusing on their childhood and the bond that formed between them.

  • Key Story Decisions

A key decision in the story was to frame Joe Jackson as a villain, showing how his control and abuse shaped Michael’s childhood and sense of self. At the same time, we focused on Michael’s human side - his vulnerability, loneliness, and struggles as a child star without dwelling on allegations or controversies. We chose specific scenes, like the fallout after Oprah Interview and Brooke confronting Joe Jackson, to highlight the emotional turning points in Michael and Brooke’s friendship, showing its depth and fragility. By showing the impact of their parents, the story creates empathy for both Michael and Brooke, letting the audience understand their experiences without judgment.

  • Emotional & Structural Strategy

The story is driven by childhood experiences and the forces that shaped both Michael and Brooke. Michael’s isolation and Joe Jackson’s control set the stakes, while Brooke’s complicated relationship with her mother adds contrast and context. Structurally, the story unfolds in chapters - Michael’s father, Brooke’s mother, and Michael’s downfall. Each chapter builds empathy, showing how their parents shaped them and how they navigated the world as children under intense pressure. Emotionally, the story focuses on vulnerability, resilience, and the fragility of their friendship, letting the audience connect to both characters without sensationalizing controversy.

Takeaway

This project reinforced the value of starting with a strong story backbone, then allowing space to explore and deepen it. The more I leaned into instinct and followed what felt interesting, the stronger and more layered the narrative became. It also pushed me to find fresh angles in stories audiences think they already know.
